What Is Intelligent Video Analytics? A Singapore Guide
What intelligent video analytics is, how it works on the cameras a Singapore worksite already has, what it detects, and six questions for choosing a provider.
Intelligent video analytics is software that reads CCTV footage and turns it into events. Instead of a person watching a wall of screens, the software watches every camera at once, recognises what is in each frame, and raises an alert when something matches a rule. In Singapore the rule that matters most on a worksite is a safety rule: a worker without a helmet, a person inside an exclusion zone, a forklift over the speed limit, a fall.
How it works
A camera stream is decoded into frames. A detection model, trained on tens of thousands of labelled site images, finds people, vehicles, equipment and protective gear in each frame and tracks them from one frame to the next. A rules layer sits on top: this zone is off limits while the crane is slewing, this area requires a harness, this speed is the limit for that vehicle. When a track breaks a rule, the system cuts a clip, stamps it with the camera, the time and the rule, and sends it to whoever is on shift. On a well-tuned site the whole chain, from the moment something happens to the alert on a phone, takes under a second.
The cameras stay as they are. Intelligent video analytics runs behind them, on a small server at the site or in the cloud, and works with the IP cameras most Singapore sites already have.
What it is not
It is not a video surveillance system. A VSS records footage so it can be reviewed after something has happened; the Ministry of Manpower requires one on construction projects from SGD 5 million. Video analytics interprets footage while it is happening. A site can have the first without the second, and most do. It is also not facial recognition or number-plate reading. Safety analytics identifies what a person is doing and wearing, not who they are, which is why it sits comfortably inside PDPA obligations when footage stays on site.
What it detects on a Singapore worksite
